How MSPs Can Prepare for Increased Cyber Threats
Cyber attackers are always looking to reap the largest reward from the smallest amount of effort. They look for targets that can be easily compromised, while providing access to significant monetary value. Attacking a managed service provider (MSP) with many unsuspecting clients is one way to gain access to a larger reward.
The increase in cyberthreats has been attributed to the growing number of people working outside their protected office networks. CRN reported on an alert issued recently noting malicious cyber activity targeting MSPs is on the rise and is expected to continue. Vulnerable MSPs are often targeted as they are a pathway to many smaller organizations and once compromised, bad actors leverage ransomware and cyber espionage tactics. According to a report by NTT, nearly 40% of companies use a third party to manage their IT needs including infrastructure, monitoring and securing confidential data.
When cyber criminals successfully attack an MSP, the results can range from data breaches to disruption of service to customers, which oftentimes means the customers lose access to their network, systems and applications.
Earlier in the year, President Biden urged private sector companies to implement best practices to strengthen their cybersecurity. The White House followed with an Executive Order to improve the nation’s cybersecurity making it clear that “the prevention, detection, assessment, and remediation of cyber incidents is a top priority and essential to national and economic security.”
The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) joined international authorities to release an advisory, Protecting Against Cyber Threats to Managed Service Providers and their Customers, to provide best practices and guidance on protection against malicious cyber activity that includes:
MSPs have long been regarded by their customers as trusted advisors, and as they have the “keys to many kingdoms” need to be armed with the most effective tools to manage the latest threats. Some MSPs use point solutions, however that approach often leaves opportunities to attack between the seams. The most secure option is to find a single, robust cybersecurity solution to protect their customers and their revenue streams.
If you’re an MSP, a value-added reseller, or an IT or security consultant working with SMB customers, you already know that current solutions fall short of the mark, while security needs have never been greater.
